Elmsdale Square – Christmas Tree

Elmsdale Square - so much history for such a small plot of land.

The ‘Square’ viewed on Google, has become a ‘hexagon’ with the passing of time. Skirted by the parking lot and entrance to the Riverview United Church. The ‘New Revised Building’ was opened in 1994, after decades of changes, starting back in 1932. The Square’s front border is flanked by HWY #2, a main road since the early 1800’s. Elmsdale Road runs the south/west side past where Saint Matthews Presbyterian Church was built in 1862. The lot, topped off by Miller Road, starting with the Viewpoint building, (remembered by most as a general store back in the late 60’s early 70’s) further leads to the original home built by St. Matthews first Minister Rev. John Cameron.

The home is still standing and now contains Briarwood B & B.

The beautifully poignant granite monument was installed in 1922. The wood statue of the Lone Soldier standing guard was carved by Colin Rogers in 2021, to retire it’s former comrade. This unassuming, history filled little ‘hexagon’ of land has become the heart of the Elmsdale community, where we honor our fallen heroes on November 11th and come together each December to dispel the darkness of winter with the light of hope and promise only Christ’s birth (and a really big Christmas tree) can bring.

Betty Calder began professionally painting in 2021,

after being forced to retire due to a disability called Trigeminal Neuralgia (TN).
